Chronic sinusitis means inflammation of the sinuses that lasts for 12 weeks or more. It can cause a blocked or runny nose, facial pressure, a reduced sense of smell and post-nasal drip. It’s usually managed by a GP, and sometimes an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, with treatments such as saline rinses and nasal sprays.
See your GP first
Persistent sinus symptoms should be assessed by a doctor, especially if you have symptoms on one side only, nosebleeds, swelling around the eyes, severe headache, fever or changes in vision. These need prompt medical attention.
What the research says about acupuncture
There is very limited research on acupuncture for chronic sinusitis, and the studies that exist are small. We can’t say acupuncture treats sinusitis. Some people use TCM alongside their medical treatment for general wellbeing or comfort, and that’s a personal choice to make with realistic expectations.
How TCM describes sinus problems
In TCM, ongoing sinus congestion is often described in terms of Lung and Spleen patterns, and Dampness or Heat. These are traditional concepts rather than medical diagnoses. A TCM practitioner uses them to tailor treatment, which may include acupuncture, dietary suggestions and, after a full consultation, herbal medicine.
A note on herbs
Chinese herbal medicine can interact with prescription medicines and isn’t suitable for everyone. Always tell your practitioner about any medication you take, and let your GP know about any herbs you’re prescribed.
