Sports Injury Recovery: Where TCM and Remedial Massage Fit

Most sports injuries, such as muscle strains, tendon irritation and joint sprains, recover with time, sensible loading and a good rehabilitation plan. Many active people also use hands-on treatment along the way. This article explains how acupuncture, remedial massage and other TCM techniques can fit into recovery, and where their limits are.

Get a diagnosis first

If you’ve had a significant impact, can’t bear weight, notice swelling that keeps increasing, or have numbness or weakness, please see a GP, physiotherapist or sports doctor first. Some injuries need imaging, a referral or a specific rehabilitation program, and hands-on treatment shouldn’t delay that.

What hands-on treatment can offer

Remedial massage and acupuncture are commonly used to help with muscle tension, stiffness and pain during recovery. Research on acupuncture and massage for musculoskeletal pain suggests they may help some people with short-term pain relief, although results vary between studies and between individuals. They work best as part of a plan that includes rest where needed, gradual return to load and strength work, not as a replacement for it.

The techniques we use

  • Remedial massage and Tui Na: hands-on work for tight or overworked muscles
  • Acupuncture: fine needles at selected points, often used for pain and tension
  • Cupping: suction cups that lift the soft tissue; it can leave temporary circular marks
  • Moxibustion: gentle warmth applied near the skin

Your practitioner will explain what they recommend and why, and you can say no to any technique.

Working with your physio or coach

We’re happy to fit treatment around a physio’s rehab plan or a training schedule. Let us know what exercises you’ve been given and any restrictions, so treatment supports rather than competes with them.
